Community members from sporting, recreation and social groups across our region met last week to discuss what social inclusion really means for communities and how we can all play a role in making this a reality for the Coffs Coast.
The morning tea, which was held in the beautiful surroundings of Coffs Butterfly House, was the first event hosted by Community Care Option’s ‘ConnectABLE” project, formerly known as the Inclusive Community Partnerships Project.
Representatives from groups such as the Coffs Harbour Chess Club, Bellingen Community Arts Council, Sing Australia, Coffs Kegel Nine Pin Bowling, Urunga Sail Training Club and The Harbour Tennis Academy shared their ideas and experiences to explore how people with limited community participation can have more opportunities to get involved in their community and develop valuable social relationships.
“There are thousands of people in our region who need support with daily living and whilst they want to get out and about and be a part of our community like anyone else, they can experience a lot of barriers to making this happen” said Kate Warner, Community Engagement Officer at Community Care Options.
“Through ConnectABLE, we hope to draw on our region’s existing assets, resources and connections to break down some of these barriers and build a community where everyone has the same opportunity to make meaningful social connections and lead an active, healthy life.”
Discussions highlighted community transport solutions, networking and information sharing opportunities, flexible activities at accessible venues and community education as being critical to building an inclusive Coffs Coast. These themes will inform the focus of the ConnectABLE project moving forward.
Community Care Options is keen to collaborate with community stakeholders across the region to create positive and sustainable change through this project. If your group or organisation is interested in participating in ConnectABLE, contact Community Care Options on 6650 2000.
